The oldest house in Asheville

The Rankin House is the oldest house in the Montford District and the oldest frame built house in Asheville. This circa 1843 home features Greek Revival architecture with Italianate details.  The proud craftmanship of yesteryear is evident in the detail-rich exterior.  The double-entrance doors, with sidelights and transom, sit amidst an elaborate two-story porch with large, paneled wood columns and colonial railings.  The entranceway is graced with a pair of hand-molded, pegged, wooden doors. The lower porch railing has an unusual crossed "X". The upper railing has narrow straight balusters, and the pair of exterior doors also bears the same hand-molded panel configuration and sidelights, mirroring the main entrance doors. There are eight exterior doors, servicing 900 square feet of covered porches and 400 square feet of open balconies. The rear doors also have raised panels and transoms above all first floor doors. There are six different configurations of eave brackets. Four brick chimneys serve seven large  woodburning fireplaces. The windows are oversized, in keeping with the scale of the home. The second story rear balcony/porch overlooks a large stone patio with a pond that is just a step off the back porch. There is one large bay area extending out from the living room and a second bay area near the kitchen that serves as a pantry.

There are five bedrooms and five baths, with a possible innkeeper/housekeeper suite on the ground floor.  The spacious rooms would make a very elegant B&B. This is a must see for anyone seeking a NC mountain bed and breakfast for sale.  The dining room accomodates a long table or several small tables.  The grounds are beautiful, with several nooks that entice guests to wander.  This property is an easy walk to fine dining, shopping and all the "unique flavor" of downtown Asheville.

Possibly an apartment:  Two adjoining bedrooms plus bath and separate entrance, create the possibility of an income-producing apartment.  A "kitchen in a cabinet" is included in this suite of rooms.  A Certificate of Occupancy is in place for this to be a rentable apartment.
